KVM in Linux 3.1: Start guest systems from guests

KVM in Linux 3.1: Start guest systems from guests

Probably in the next one to three weeks appears Linux kernel 3.1 will provide basic functionality to start using the virtualization capabilities of recent Intel processors guests from another KVM guest out. These "nested virtualization" technology known to be about interesting, to run on a Linux host is a Windows 7 as a KVM guest and there to use the XP mode, the Windows starts a virtual machine and virtualization capabilities in the CPU dependent. AMD processors dominate Nested Virtualization with KVM since the summer of 2009.

Some background on the technology provide the developers of nested virtualization support for Intel CPUs in the text version of a lecture and the kernel documentation. There are also some of the limitations of the fledgling code - so you have the nested virtualization support is still explicitly on the Intel-Kvm-parameters "nested = 1" switch. In addition, only 64-bit hypervisor support and it should be able to start so far only Linux guests from a guest. There were patches in development but in order to start Windows in a KVM guest or to run Linux on a running VMware Server as a guest.
