Counterfeiters in China
Viagra investigator chasing Apple Pirates
Apple has a problem in China: Over the years, the Group has failed to take action against pirates and counterfeiters. Embassy dispatches show that the Group has radically pivoted around to fend off imitators. Among other things, an Apple investigator, tracking down the earlier Viagra copier.
Hamburg
- Experienced specialists who were searching for Viagra before copies
are to defend Apple in the fight against product piracy in China. This
emerges from a U.S. embassy dispatches which had been leaked to
Wikileaks and which have now been published in the original. The
document stipulates the U.S. group the Chinese market and especially
the manufacturers of illegal product copies had long ignored.
So
far as the media had indeed Spiegel reported on the contents of the
WikiLeaks files, but it omitted the names of the parties in order to
protect informants. After
the files are now distributed by mistake in the original, there are
increasing reports based on information from this material. Among other Flightglobal.com describes how the U.S. government prevented a large shipment of Airbus aircraft to Syria. On Tuesday finally brought the news channel CNN to be an article about Apple's efforts, the piracy of Mr. Asia.
The
message cited CNN's despatch, dated September 2008 showed that the U.S. company has begun only in 2008 with the establishment
of a department that should take care of the prosecution of illegal
copies of Apple products. At this point, it is assumed in the paper, are almost all sold in China as Apple's products have been replicas of devices.
First of the Brand Register
Apple hired a team of experienced professionals, led by Don Shruhan. Earlier,
Shruhan and his team for five years for the pharmaceutical company
Pfizer in China wanted by companies that the potency drug Viagra and
counterfeit imitations threw at bargain prices at the market.
In their report, the authors refer repeatedly to the dispatch directly to Shruhan. He
reportedly said that he would when he took office as Senior Director of
Security for the Asia-Pacific at Apple virtually starting from scratch.
Until
that time the company had the Asian market seems so neglected that only
once had to file Shruhan Apple trademark in China and Hong Kong.
A laboratory for testing the authenticity
As
part of its analysis of the new security chief noted that in Asia
remarkably genuine copies, especially of iPods and iPhones that are
traded. Their
authenticity was a result of the fact that for example the original
forms of greeting are stolen from the factories of Apple's suppliers and
used elsewhere for the production of copies. This would indeed look like the originals, but are often second-rate hardware included.
In
fact, the copies are often so good that money could be Shruhan grant
for a forensic laboratory to be checked for authenticity in the
products.
The authors of the message dispatch can not find good words for Chinese officials. The customs authorities in Hong Kong exports would not be controlled, not by the traffic stop. In
Beijing, in turn, the law enforcement authorities had indeed confirmed
their participation, but would not act really aggressive, but only reap
the fruits of what had determined Shruhan and his department.
Everyone may be Apple, as long as he sells originals
In the dispatch Apple comes away not too good. It is said Shruhan had "laments" that Apple's lawyers would have had no experience in China. In
addition, the company was very cautious in complying with standards in
the Chinese lawyers' correspondence with their local marketing and am
still at the very beginning.
Explanations of how he wanted to change this situation are not to be found by the head of security at the embassy despatch. Only evidence that it will certainly harder to persuade the authorities to cooperate. Because unlike Viagra, it would not work with Apple to health-related issues.
So far, it seems, has retained legal Shruhan with this assessment. Although the four Apple stores in China are the Apple retail stores with the largest number of visitors and sales worldwide.
But in recent weeks, several shops have been known in China, who gave in without a license seems to be Apple Stores. Had to be closed, however, revealed only two of the five stores. Not because they violate Apple's trademark, but because they had no valid operating permit. Otherwise,
everything was in order, founded the competent authorities, in the
shops would eventually original Apple product sold.
And now it runs extremely well for Apple in China: In late June last fiscal quarter, Apple has taken $ 3.8 billion in China. And they only scratch "on the surface," Tim Cook, Apple's manager said at the time analysts.
